Learning The Basics of Guitar
This is an ongoing project aimed to be a learning attachment for existing guitars that promotes guitar playing posture, finger dexterity, and learning styles for beginners at all ages.
Development
02
Thumb Blocker Volume
Iterations of volumes and shapes were explored to develop the optimal placement to prevent incorrect posture and encourage correct.
04
Product Interface
What sort of features do beginner guitarists want when following a lesson? Developing a common use of button features and form is important for optimal progression.
01
Left Hand Thumb Blocker
Early Guitarists have always had difficulty maintaining the proper thumb positioning on the neck of a guitar. Developing a thumb blocker located toward the top side of the neck was crucial in preventing thumb rollover.
03
Left Hand Palm Volume
The shape of the product allows for extra volume at the low end of the neck, preventing the palm of the hand from performing with poor form.
Prototyping the Interaction - Study #1
In this version developing a better understanding how people may learn tunes and chords to songs was the primary focus. With minimal instruction and limited pre-existing knowledge of the guitar, individuals were asked to follow along to the LED sequence located at the top of the neck. The LEDs illuminated and remained illuminated for the duration of every note in the musical sequence of Seven Nation Army. Afterwards users were asked to take a 5 minute survey to discuss their results.

Prototyping the Interaction - Study #2
Again with minimal instruction and limited pre-existing knowledge of the guitar, individuals were asked to follow along to the LED sequence. This test rig was built from an already existing memory and reflex game intended for horizontal use. By rewiring the device onto the neck of a guitar, the game has become a tool for developing a finger dexterity and guitar muscle memory.
